The Delighted People has recently acquired a lot of new readers (welcome, by the way!) who may not know about where TDP all began. This blog started out as a series of interviews with lovely people I find particularly delightful, so today we will return to our roots with an interview of the beautiful Rebecca Todd. Peruse past interviews here. Happy reading!
the [story]: Rebecca and I met last year at a job training program where we were assigned as roommates and became fast friends. Living (and quilting) with this gal for two months was one of the highlights of 2014. Even after spending most waking hours together for nine weeks, I can never get enough of Becca Todd!
your [soundtrack]: "Meet Virginia" by Train, "Thy Mercy, My God" by Sandra McCracken, "Be Thou My Vision" (acoustically, by anyone with a guitar)
your [script]: The Sound of Music, Pride & Prejudice, and Bridesmaids.
your [rough draft]: It seems so cliché to say the Bible, but I'd be lying if I acted like I've ever thought twice about anything else I've read. I love Hebrews and Isaiah because of they're such beautiful pictures of Christ's deity and these two books have steered me through ultra pivotal points in my life.
your [shade]: Green. I love it in every shade; it makes up nearly 90% of my wardrobe.
your [inspiration]: Fearlessness. When people with big dreams fearlessly pursue them, I'm all wide eyes and goosebumps.
your [mantra]:"For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come, instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near." Hebrews 10:1 | "Let us know; let us press on to know the Lord; his going out is sure as the dawn; he will come to us as the showers, as the spring rains that water the earth." Hosea 6:3 | "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt." - Abraham Lincoln
your [purpose]: I love Jesus because He loved me first, and I've chosen to follow Him wherever he leads--not because I'm crazy or ignorant, but because the God of the universe who created everything chose to love me despite myself. Knowing that He offers this freely to EVERYONE gives me a boatload of purpose on this planet to make much of who He is. | "You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you." John 15:16
you [believe]: I believe in Jesus, and in the same way I know He changed me by giving me everything I didn't (and still don't) deserve, I believe that unforeseen grace and love can truly change people.
your [influence]: My momma. The woman is a prayer warrior and one of the kindest, most caring people I've ever known. I've learned so many great things from her, and as much as I hate to say it, I know I've already started picking up all of her little mom-isms that I used to make fun of her for...Gracious, I miss her so much.
you [admire]: Articulacy. I love being around others who don't overuse or abuse their words, but speak with intent. People who can talk carefully and eloquently are the ones worth listening to. (Al, this is one of yours that I love and respect a whole bunch.)
your [escape]: Driving, which is unfortunate considering I now live in Europe and don't have a car, let alone a valid driver's license...These days, relaxing looks more like going to the movies, sitting in a dark theater, getting sucked into another world, and feeling more like I'm back home.
your [perfection]: Jesus.
your [challenge]: Being direct with people & having an opinion.
you want to [meet]: Jesus (PTL that's not a distant wish, but a true reality for one day), Paul, and my granddad Ralph.
...OH. and how's about MY HUSBAND? Let's be real, I would love to meet this dude.
your [wildest dream]: I always wanted to be a Radio City Rockette, but considering that ship has more or less sailed, I would LOVE to foster a gazillion kids. And then adopt them.
your [pet peeve]:Adults in pig tails.
your [vices]: Chapstick & clever greeting cards.
your [last purchase]: A double cappuccino.
your [now]:I'm living in Eastern Europe working with a small company that teaches english and volunteering with college students - hanging out together, mentoring & talking lots about Jesus.
your [humbles moment]:I have an arsenal of stories I could share, but this one is almost always a crowd pleaser: I was walking to class my freshman year of college and tripped on the bricks, which sent me face-planting into the backpack in front me and my hands got weirdly trapped under her backpack (like on her rear) and I couldn't stand back upright. She kept walking, and I did too, still face-planted and all over her backside; I looked like T-Rex with his tiny arms stuck and face buried in the poor girl's bag. It was weird and strange and felt like forever and far too many people saw.
your [secret]: I'm a former unicyclist. Also, I can touch my nose with my tongue.
you [are]: Levelheaded.
My Bex, you are a soul sister. I have yet to know you a full calendar year, but our hearts and lives are intertwined in deeply significant ways that make you feel more like an old friend than a recent roommate. Endless kindness, contagious enthusiasm, constant encouragement, holy wisdom, and buoyant wit lie beneath your complete humility – you truly have no idea just how extraordinary you are. You love others so fully by listening well, giving generously, accepting the ugly stuff without judgement, and bearing through with steady patience. We walked through an incredibly strange, scary, wonderful, overwhelming time together, and I couldn't have dreamed up a better companion. Thank you for laughing when I laughed and weeping when I wept, for going all-in to this "life together" thing. Those many hours spent across the table from you in our cold, twinkle-light-spangled kitchen are precious treasures I will forever keep in my heart. (And obviously I will never encounter a quilt that doesn't immediately remind me of my Becca girl.) Eastern Europe has never been more blessed than the day you arrived. Keep making those soul connections, my sister friend.
